Biophilia & Industrialism Collide In The Munich WunderLocke Hotel

Lifestyle aparthotel brand Locke has furthered its European expansion with WunderLocke, a new offering in Munich’s Sendling neighbourhood. Locke has made a name for itself through its experiential, design-led approach to aparthotels, with each location’s fashionable aesthetic and cultural programs encouraging mid- to long-stays.

Conceived by London-based interior design studio Holloway Li, WunderLocke is centred around the abstract work of Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, whose paintings explored how we can develop a closer relationship to nature through abstraction. Inside the former Siemens office building, Holloway Li interprets this notion by stripping the building back to reveal its raw concrete frame — a nod to the neighbourhood’s industrial origins — and using an abundance of plantings throughout to represent renewal.

The WunderLocke comprises 360 apartments, an expansive co-working space, coffee shop, meeting and event spaces, an outdoor pool, and a sauna and workout studio. Like other Locke spaces, WunderLocke features a combination of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, some of which include a private terrace and panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps.

Complementing the concrete frame of the building are tones and materials inspired by nature, interspersed with sumptuous materials and vivid pops of colour. In favour of over-cladding and other material-intensive options, the concrete is softened by warm timbers, natural materials, and greenery throughout, while plush seating in pastel and jewel tones adds life to the space.

Teal leather lines the perimeter of the bar counter, while the seating area is enlivened by yellow tub chairs, red banquette seating, and pastel pink backing. The co-working space takes on a more natural tone, with sea-green sofas and communal desks crafted from warm timber.

Guest suites are decked in soothing hues of blue and green, with each apartment containing a lounge area and kitchenette.

Working to provide a new creative hub in southwest Munich, WunderLocke is located a short distance from the city centre and within easy reach of the Bavarian Alps.
