The introduction of the Porsche Taycan range less than two years ago signified a new epoch of EVs, characterised by a sporty driving experience and high performance. Now, the latest iteration of the German marque’s signature EV has arrived in the form of the 2022 Porsche Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo.

Combining futuristic tech with vintage ‘90s colourways, the 2022 Porsche Taycan is a paradoxical vehicle. However, the latest generation of Porsche Taycan promises more than just fresh colourways. The German marque claims the 2022 Porsche Taycan range will be greater in day-to-day use, through the implementation of extensive technological developments. However, WLTP figures will remain identical to the previous Taycan iteration, which offers up to 482km depending on configuration; so while the new software may extend the 2022 Porsche Taycan’s ability to cover range, official figures likely won’t reflect this.
Technological advancements include decoupling and de-energising the partial load range in all-wheel drive models while in Normal and Range Models. Plus, no drive is transmitted to either axle when the car is coasting or at a standstill, which works to reduce drag losses. Motors are only switched on when the diver requires more power or alters the driving mode, allowing for greater range.
Additionally, though the battery itself will remain the same, Porsche has improved its thermal management and charging functions, allowing for faster charging through the use of a Turbo Charging Planner.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan also sees the introduction of a Remote Park Assist system, allowing drivers to control the car into and out of parking spaces without being behind the wheel. The system is activated via a smartphone app, with the system automatically detecting and measuring parking spaces, making nailing a tight park a whole lot easier.
For the aesthetically minded among us, the new shades available to adorn the 2022 Porsche Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo are arguably the most crucial upgrade. In addition to 17 standard paint colours, the Paint to Sample scheme offers up an additional 65 heritage hues from the ‘90s, including Moonlight Blue Metallic, Acid Green, Rubystar Red, Riviera Blue, and Viola Metallic to deliver a healthy dose of nostalgia.
“Our all-electric Taycan range is growing and thriving,” says Kevin Giek, vice president of the Taycan model line since April. Indeed it is; the Taycan is now Porsche’s third best-selling vehicle in North America (after the Cayenne and Macan), with around 20,000 models delivered in the first half of 2021 alone which Porsche claims is on par with sales of sports icon, the Porsche 911.
