The MC stands for Maserati Corse (‘racing’ in Italian) and 20 refers to 2020, the year that marked a new era for the marque. The MC20 Cielo (‘sky’) places an emphasis on the great outdoors, offering an immersive driving experience courtesy of its electrochromic roof; the press of a button opens the smart glass roof up to the sky in a mere 12 seconds. Alternatively, the ambience of the cabin can be enhanced by hitting the button again, turning the roof from opaque to clear, thanks to Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology.

Like its slightly more covered up older brother, the Maserati MC20 Cielo is equipped with a 3.0-lire twin-turbo V6 engine, with an output of 630bhp and 540 ft-lbs torque sent to the wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The MC20 Cielo goes from 0-100km/h in 3 seconds and tops out in excess of 320km/h.

The clean lines of the Maserati MC20 Cielo are enhanced by the visually striking exclusive Acquamarina hue, with the launch colour designed to convey the sense of being outdoors. Based on a racing-inspired grey, the three-layer paint features iridescent mica in aquamarine, lending it an ethereal sheen that interacts with the light.

In the limited series PrimaSerie Launch Edition vehicle, the butterfly doors fold upwards to the sky, revealing ice blue leather that complements the carbon fibre cockpit and minimalist interiors. Designed with both function and form in mind, the butterfly doors were created with the intention of making it easier for the driver and passengers to enter and exit the car, despite the low floor.

In a move that’s definitely function first, the Maserati MC20 Cielo also marks the debut of new Active Safety Systems, with the spyder building on the parking sensors, rearview camera, and blindspot monitoring of the standard MC20 by introducing automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and a 360° camera. A natural step, as while the Maserati MC20 Cielo looks to the sky, you’ll still need to follow the rules of the road.
