The Latest Range Rover Velar Is An Expression Of Urban Automotive Essentialism

Initially introduced in 2017, the Range Rover Velar ushered in a new design language for the British marque — one that was most recently used in the Range Rover Sport — that placed emphasis on clean lines and smooth forms, catering more to the city driver than off-road aficionados.

Sleek and low, the Range Rover Velar was built utilising a reductionist design philosophy. The latest incarnation of the Velar features some blink-and-you’ll-miss-them changes, with the signature silhouette remaining unaltered. The concept of reductionism is further leaned into, with the Velar pared back to the essentials. The geometric patterns on the grille are revised and bookended by new super-slim pixel LED headlights that boast a technical, jewel-like appearance. The rear is further streamlined, with a lower bumper and dark accents.

Inside, multiple displays have been swapped for a single curved glass touchscreen integrated into the centre console, speaking to the monastically minimal design approach. Continuing to offer a leather-free interior option, the newly updated Velar introduces new seat designs and materials. In addition to leather and synthetic suede options, there’s a new leather-free option called Kvadrat, a Danish wool blend that pairs a contemporary appearance with enhanced tactility. The fabric has been rigorously tested for durability, ensuring it lasts throughout the lifetime of the vehicle. Naturally, new internal colour and trim options have been added, as well as two new colour options for the exterior palette: Metallic Varesine Blue and Premium Metallic Zadar Grey.

Passenger comfort is enhanced through an impossibly quiet ride, with the help of an Active Road Noise Cancellation system. While there’s no completely electric version, the new plug-in hybrid has a pure-electric driving range of up to 69km, thanks to a redesigned battery pack. Both the petrol and diesel versions utilise mild hybrid technology to ensure fuel efficiency.

“[The] new Range Rover Velar is a flawless example of our modernist design philosophy – clean, reductive, and compellingly desirable,” says Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, the chief creative officer at Jaguar Land Rover. “Defined by perfectly optimised proportions, Range Rover Velar embodies effortless sophistication with a bold elegance and dramatic presence that is truly unique.”
