Winona Ryder For Marc Jacobs Proves You Can Steal Your Clothes & Wear Them Too

In 2001, at the height of her fame, a then 30-year-old Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting $5,560USD worth of merchandise from the Saks Fifth Avenue store on Wilshire Boulevard. Amongst her sartorial selections was a $760USD cashmere sweater by Marc Jacobs. A highly-publicised six-day trial followed, wherein the Girl, Interrupted actress sported an array of chic looks to court, including a dress by — you guessed it — Marc Jacobs.

Ryder was subsequently found guilty of felony grand theft and vandalism, and sentenced to three years probation, 480 hours of community service, and a substantial fine. Meanwhile, designer Marc Jacobs decided to turn a lost sweater into high publicity gains, casting Ryder in his Spring 2003 campaign shot by Juergen Teller, and later making her the face of his namesake beauty brand in 2015.

Now, Ryder once again stars in a campaign for Marc Jacobs. Shot by Harley Weir, Ryder clutches the new Marc Jacobs bag, with the J Marc drawing inspiration from the brand’s archival Stam bag. The campaign sees Ryder sport the J Marc as a clutch, crossbody, and shoulder bag, with the silhouette available in a vast array of patterns and colourways. The shoot was styled by Emma Wyman, with Ryder donning a selection of gothic glam pieces like the Marc Jacobs Kiki boots and archival tulle and lace pieces.

The J Marc bag is now available via the Marc Jacobs webstore.
